Apple's September 1st "Special Event"

As any legitimate Apple fan can tell you, Apple will be holding a "Special Event" on September 1st, at 1pm as usual. However, that same fan may not be able to tell you what apple will be announcing at the event. There have been various leaked images about what may be announced, and of course, people have also shared their opinions of what will be announced, so today I'm going to take a different tack. Today, on The Tech Spot, you will find out precisely what this writer believes Apple should (and might) announce this coming wednesday. Are you ready?

1st: The iPod Touch 4th Generation
- Front and back facing cameras for Facetime. Unlike the iPhone 4, a jailbreak cant make this one work over 3G
- Flash Memory Upgrades
- 16GB for $199
- 32GB for $299
- 64GB for $399
- Gyroscope and Retina Display(like the iPhone 4)
- The release date will be no earlier than september 7th
- All models will have the same amount of RAM as the 32 and 64GB models from the 3rd generation
- the 8GB model will be discontinued
- The design will be more iPhone 4-esque, with a rectangular back side and similar or identical volume buttons.
- Hopefully, apple will include different color choices this time. Even white vs. black would be nice.

2nd: iPod Nano 6th Generation
- 3X3 inch touchscreen
- it will be an iOS device, but it will function with restrictions. No wifi means no safari, and no wirelessly downloading apps. All apps will need to be downloaded through itunes and synced to the device like music.
- Like the touch, it will have volume buttons similar to the new iphone

3rd: An Apple TV for $99?
4th: Updated iLife
BONUS:) - Some rumors are going around that say the new iPod Touch will have 3G, but it is much more likely that the iPod will not get a 3G version this year, but that it may actually get the option for 3G next year come september. This is very similar to what happened last year when it was rumored that the 3rd Gen iPod Touch would be getting a camera.

As time went by, it became increasingly apparent to me that no matter how hard I tried to get people to read my blog, nothing would change... and that the few people that did read it every once in a while hardly ever left me any comments. So since my blogs were entirely for the benefit of others, and not myself, I ceased to write them. How to backup time machine to a external hard drive connected to a PC

If you have a MacBook or MacBook Pro in a PC network then you can understand that it is sometimes difficult to get along. Also, if you're at all like me, you buy as few apple products as possible because they cost waaaay too much.
So, lets get to the point shall we? If you have a macbook, and it has 5-8 hours of battery life... then you probably didnt buy it so you could keep it on your desk all day did you? No? I didnt think so, you want portability. I found that it is very hard to plug an external hard drive into my macbook pro and remain portable, and like I said: time capsule, apples wireless backup solution, is way too expensive. Today I will show you how to build your own time capsule to backup your mac wirelessly. It isnt hard as long as you follow my instructions.

Items needed:
Any kind of mac with leopard installed, preferably with latest updates.
A PC with XP, Vista, or 7
an external hard drive that you want to backup to. i recommend that the size of the hard drive be larger than your macs hard drive.

Note: This is not a perfect solution, your PC will need to be on for your mac to backup to it's external hard drive.

Phase One: Prepare the windows machine.
Find the name of this PC, it is usually under properties on the right click menu of "my computer"
Plug the eternal hard drive into the PC
Once windows recognizes it and installs its drivers: open my computer
right click the backup drive and click share
on xp, set up sharing as usual
on vista and 7, click advanced sharing
check share this folder
name it, and then click permissions
check full control
open network and sharing center
make sure that file sharing is on
Phase Two: Prepare the MacBook
open terminal
paste: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
hit enter
quit terminal
Mount your network drive by clicking finder and pressing command+k or going to go>connect to server. type in smb://your_pc's_computer_name and then mount the backup folder.
select the network backup in Time Machine.
Start Time Machine (Menu button > Backup Now) and watch your remote location.
A file is created with the structure ComputerName_MACAddress.tmp.sparcebundle. Copy this file's name.
On your Mac, open Disk Utility. Click “New Image.” Use the following settings:
Save As ComputerName_MACAddress
Volume name can be whatever you want, i named it the same as my backup folder.
DO NOT SET CUSTOM VOLUME SIZE YET
Change partition to “No Partition Map”
Change Image Format to “Sparce Bundle Disk Image”
Custom Volume size. Set the maximum you want to use on your remote location, my backup was 232GB, and I used 200GB.
Save the image file to your desktop. Move this file to your remote location.
Tell Time Machine to backup again and it should be working.

Contgrats, you now have a working time machine backup to a PC's external hard drive.

My new macbook pro

I just sold my old (although it was less than a year old) sony vaio and replaced it with a macbook pro. It was a solid purchase, and I am very happy. It is a great machine, but i cant wait for snow leopard to be released because safari and finder keep crashing on me.
Overall, the differences between my new mac and my old vaio are as follows:
Pros:
Magsafe adapter
firewire
7 hour battery
multitouch trackpad
battery indicator lights
time machine.... there is nothing like it on windows
extremely useful Fn keys. I use the itunes controls, the screen brightness and keyboard brightness adjusters every day. I also love the volume controls and quick access to dashboard.
awesome dvd drive...
beautiful, in every respect

Cons:
Wait, apple thinks User Account control is annoying?! They make you enter your password and give confirmation for everything!
Crashes more often than my old pc (running windows 7)
the eject button... if your going to put it there, why not make it eject a flash drive when it is selected also?
cannot write to ntfs drives or fat drives quickly. might be microsoft's fault.
lack of windows features: I'm used to having some features in operating systems i use by default, and after switching to mac I realized that it doesnt have everything that windows has, here are some examples:
A delete key on the keyboard, not backspace.
Restore files from trash
maximize windows
switch tasks easily... in leopard if you have two safari windows open alt+tab does not switch you to the other window, only a different application
jumplists... i know they arent even out yet, but osx 10.7 needs them.

Overall, I am very happy that I bought a mac, and I actually dont think I'll be installing windows on it. I feel somewhat like a traitor for getting both and iphone and a mac, rather than a windows mobile phone like the htc touch pro 2 and a dell... I really dont like apple due to their extreme overpricing, but its harder than it looks to boycott on principle ;D

We all can be heroes: Send a message, save the world (or your wallets)

Ok, so it isnt the best heroes reference, but thats besides the point. I'm trying to get as many people as possible to send a message to your cell phone provider informing them that you (the customer) are fed up with paying for unnecessary charges, and that you no longer want to hear that annoying lady from the 90's that tells you how to leave a message.

Please send this message, an altered version of it, or entirely your own message to your carrier. You can be anonymous, it doesn't matter... but if everyone sent one than they would assuredly change their policy don't ya think?

I am mad-as-hell-and-not-going-to-take-it about the ridiculous idea that we still need to be told how to use voicemail, and it turns out those additional messages are actually costing me cold, hard cash. David Pogue estimates that Verizon, for instance, is netting around $620 million a year thanks to these little annoyances.
On another note: At&t could easily include unlimited messaging within their unlimited data plans and not charge a penny more. And why not? We're transmitting more data when online and emailing than we are with a stupid little SMS which, by the way, is limited to a small number of characters.. But of course, you do nickel and dime us like we're still stuck in the early 90's... People are getting ripped off and overcharged for features that should come standard, and any carrier that integrates SMS into their data plans first will be my new carrier, and I'm sure other people will switch en masse. This is ridiculous... I know it, you know it, everyone knows it, and like I said before: The first carrier who offers unlimited messaging as a part of their data plans without charging extra, will get an enormous amount of business!
We're waiting, and the clock is ticking......

Apple has gotten many of its ideas for iPhone OS directly from the community itself, and that also means from the iPhone Dev Team, and the jailbreak community. Here's a list I've compiled of applications and ideas that Apple got from them.
Note: keep in mind that not all of these are 100% accurate, it may just be a coincidence that apple did the exact same thing that the community had already done.

1) The Appstore: Installer existed long ago in the days of firmware 1.1.1, and although support has been dropped for it by it's developers for a while now, cydia has effectively replaced it.

2) Original iPhone Applications on the iPod Touch: Remember back in the 1.x.x firmwares when the iPod Touch only had a few applications? Remember when mail, weather, maps, photos, stocks, and notes where iPhone ONLY? The community added those applications to the iPod Touch at least 2 firmware versions before Apple did.

3) Voice Notes: Yes, voice notes was on repositories long before it made its way to your home screen.

4) Add events in the iPod touch calendar: Yes, that was on jailbroken devices way before it was official

5) Video Recording: Cycorder and other applications in Cydia had video recording long before the 3GS came out, where do you think apple got it from?

More will be added here when I think of it. Right now I dont have my iPhone in front of me to help me remember.

Now dont get my wrong, Apple had a few original ideas of their own. On 1.1.3 they enabled the wiggle feature to move applications and delete weblinks, which of course extended to deleting applications.

Just got the iPhone 2G

It may not be the 3G or the 3GS, but it does come with a less expensive data plan, and thats what I can afford. I got it in a trade with my cousin; he had verizon and just wanted an ipod touch, and I had at&t and an itouch.
It turned out to be very inexpensive when its added to a family plan. just 10 dollars for the line, and 20 dollars for data + 200 texts. If you put that next to similar plans for hybrid phones such as the eternity and the impression the price is exactly the same.
Its very cool, and nice to have internet everywhere. Kinda slow, but I'll live.

On January 30th, the iPhone Dev Team released RedSn0w into the wild for daring testers and jailbreak fanatics. It is a tethered jailbreak, which means that every time you reboot you must enter dfu mode and send commands from a Mac/PC. Sleep Mode does not count as a reboot.

After reading the Dev-Team blog it seems as if an ipod touch 2g jailbreak is imminent. redsn0w has been set up, and the image in the middle is a picture of the ipod touch 2g CPU (which is what was giving the dev-team problems in the first place). The hash on the top left is the most important hash file to the itouch 2g.
One of the dev-team members have commented saying that whatever they are releasing will be out, most likely, before the 18th.

Tim Sneath's Bumper List of Windows 7 Secrets

So, I was reading up on the MSDN blog, and found an article about all sorts of windows 7 tips and tricks (here: http://blogs.msdn.com/tims/archive/2009/01/12/the-bumper-list-of-windows-7-secrets.aspx) and I thought I should outline a few that stood out to me.

Windows Management. By now, you’ve probably seen that Windows 7 does a lot to make window management easier: you can “dock” a window to the left or right half of the screen by simply dragging it to the edge; similarly, you can drag the window to the top of the screen to maximize it, and double-click the window top / bottom border to maximize it vertically with the same horizontal width. What you might not know is that all these actions are also available with keyboard shortcuts:
Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow dock;
Win+Up Arrow and Win+Down Arrow maximizes and restores / minimizes;
Win+Shift+Up Arrow and Win+Shift+Down Arrow maximizes and restores the vertical size.

I think this would be very useful for people with dual monitors, I have dual monitors at my house, and after trying out these shortcuts I found that I can use them to move windows to other monitors.

Display Projection. Had enough of messing around with weird and wonderful OEM display driver utilities to get your notebook display onto an external projector? In that case, you’ll be pleased to know that projection is really quick and simple with Windows 7. Just hit Win+P, and you’ll be rewarded by the following pop-up window:

Use the arrow keys (or keep hitting Win+P) to switch to “clone”, “extend” or “external only” display settings. You can also access the application as displayswitch.exe.

If you want broader control over presentation settings, you can also press Win+X to open the Windows Mobility Center, which allows you to turn on a presentation “mode” that switches IM clients to do not disturb, disables screensavers, sets a neutral wallpaper etc. (Note that this feature is also available in Windows Vista.)

After installing the windows 7 beta this was one of the things that I noticed first. I actually stumbled upon the popup by accident while messing around in the mobility center and I thought it would be extremely useful for many users. I also like the presentation mode check box in the mobility center because you can use it to disable the screensaver in case your watching a movie or something.

Cut Out The Clutter. Working on a document in a window and want to get rid of all the extraneous background noise? Simply hit Win+Home to minimize all the non-active background windows, keeping the window you’re using in its current position. When you’re ready, simply press Win+Home again to restore the background windows to their original locations.

This, along with the Win+Space shortcut (show desktop) are very nice additions to the windows OS.

The Black Box Recorder. Every developer wishes there was a way that an end-users could quickly and simply record a repro for the problem that they’re running into that is unique to their machine. Windows 7 comes to the rescue! Part of the in-built diagnostic tools that we use internally to send feedback on the product, the Problem Steps Recorder provides a simple screen capture tool that enables you to record a series of actions. Once you hit “record”, it tracks your mouse and keyboard and captures screenshots with any comments you choose to associate alongside them. Once you stop recording, it saves the whole thing to a ZIP file, containing an HTML-based “slide show” of the steps. It’s a really neat little tool and I can’t wait for it to become ubiquitous on every desktop! The program is called psr.exe; you can also search for it from Control Panel under “Record steps to reproduce a problem”.

Windows 7 Beta Keys

So, after following the guides from mydigitallife, keznews, and lifehacker, and then refreshing my browser into infinity... I finally got my windows 7 product keys (both 32 Bit and 64 bit). Windows 7 Beta Officially Available Today!

Today Microsoft has made the Windows 7 Beta Officially available for anyone to download. You can watch LifeHackers coverage of the availablity here as they will be covering the status of product keys. Microsoft is working on getting their servers back up and running (they hadn't expected such a huge flow of users to their site). Microsoft has yet to make available the product keys for the beta, but you can still download the beta and use it for 30 days without a Key.

What Microsoft Forgot to Mention About Vista

So, just as New Years came and left, so will Windows Vista upon the release of Windows 7 later this year and the upcomming beta release tomorrow. Nothing could make the upgrade a little easier for users to deal with than the knowledge that Microsoft (along with many major computer manufacturers) kinda cheated a little bit when they sold Vista.
After reading an article on Lifehacker about Windows 7's hardware requirements I found an interesting piece of information on Microsoft.com:

While all editions of Windows Vista can support multiple core CPUs, only Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise can support dual processors.

Although this will not affect the majority of Windows Users, I found it interesting and thought I'd share it.

So, just how good is Windows 7?

You may be wondering how good Windows 7 actually is in regards to performance... You know, because it has so many new features that it must have dropped performance again like vista did right? I mean, how could a new taskbar, nicer programs (like paint and wordpad), multi-touch, kernel improvements, processing improvements, tweaked Explorer, windows solution center, and homegroups (shall I continue?) really not slow down the machine?
KezNews had the same question, and wanted to compare windows 7 to Vista Sp2 and XP Sp3.
They put each version of windows to the following tests:

1. Install OS - Time it takes to install the OS
2. Boot up - Average boot time to usable desktop
3. Shut down - Average shut down time
4. Move 100MB files - Move 100MB of JPEG files from one hard drive to another
5. Move 2.5GB files - Move 2.5GB of mixed size files (ranging from 1MB to 100MB) from one hard drive to another
6. Network transfer 100MB files - Move 100MB of JPEG files from test machine to NAS device
7. Network transfer 2.5GB files - Move 2.5GB of mixed size files (ranging from 1MB to 100MB) from test machine to NAS device

The lower the number, the better the OS.
Obviously, Windows 7 blew the other OS's away! It has all of the performance gains, and all of the visual improvements that vista and XP had + more.
I have the windows 7 beta leak installed on my vaio and Ill be testing it out and I'll post about it in a few days.

Windows 7 Review

Read this article on keznews and thought it would be good to post up here. Its incredibly acurate but I disagree on the taskbar section... I think the new taskbar is awesome.

I’ve now had my hands on Windows 7 beta 1 build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400 (the build that is widely expected to be made available to beta testers by Microsoft early in January) and have had some time to compose my thoughts and feelings about this latest release.

Beta 1 is very similar to M3 builds
The first thing that’s striking about Windows 7 beta 1 is how similar it is to the M3 builds that I’ve been using since October. In fact, put builds 6801 and 7000 beta 1 side-by-side and you might be hard pressed to spot the difference (especially if you activated the Blue Badge features). This means that if you’ve been following Windows 7 builds then when you get your hands on the beta you’ll be pretty familiar with the beta. The flip-side is that I’ve got fewer new things to show you!

It’s unusual not to be faced with heaps of new features with each build - it’s almost as though Microsoft had a plan for Windows 7 right from the start, baked these features into the early M3 build and have since been working on refining these features. This is an interesting approach that seems to have resulted in the best beta build of an OS from Microsoft that I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a LOT of beta builds!). Wow!

Installation
Installing Windows 7 beta 1 is faster and simpler than installing Windows Vista or Windows XP on a system.

There are fewer steps to work through, the installation is overall much faster than for earlier Microsoft operating systems (I can get Windows 7 onto most systems in about 25 minutes, on a powerful system the install process will take less than 20 minutes), and there are fewer obstacles between the user and the OS once it’s installed (for example, gone is that annoying post-install performance test).

New taskbar
Oddly enough, the first thing that you’re likely to notice about Windows 7 is also the bit that I like the least. The new revamped taskbar is visually very interesting (and certainly a lot easier to use at higher screen resolutions that the Vista or XP taskbar), but it tries to do too much and as such comes across as kludgey and counter-intuitive. One failure is that it’s hard to tell the difference between apps that are running and shortcuts that have been pinned to the taskbar. It also incorporates the new Jump Lists feature which acts as a context-sensitive menu for applications. Problem is that there’s very little rhyme or reason to what to expect from Jump Lists, making them awkward to use in the real world.

Aero Snap
Aero Snap is a simple little feature that I find myself using all the time. This is a gestures driven method of organizing Windows. Drag a window to the top of the screen and the app is maximized. Drag it to the side and you get it to tile to one half of the screen. Drag the app away from the top of the screen to restore it. It’s a very handy feature indeed, especially for people who work with multiple applications.

Aero Peek
Ever wanted to see what was on your desktop without minimizing all your applications? Aero Peek is the feature for you. Mouse over the small area on the right-hand side of the taskbar and you get a glimpse of what’s on your desktop, allowing you to see shortcuts and gadgets. Aero Peek is of limited usefulness though since you can’t interact with anything on the desktop because as soon as you move the mouse off the Peek spot the applications all return.

Personalizations
If you like to customize your Windows experience then you’ll appreciate some of these changes. Not only does Windows 7 come with several ready-made themes that include specific background images, colors, sounds and screensavers, there are also themes that make use of a desktop slideshow to continually change the desktop image.

Windows 7 Vs. Snow Leopard

So, Apple is secretly working on its next OS, 10.6 Snow Leopard, while Microsoft is very publicly working on its next iteration of windows: Windows 7 (Catchy name huh?)

To sum it all up... I think Windows 7 is going to be a huge hit when it comes out in Summer of next year, and I think it'll be just as big when the official beta is released in January. The leak of the beta is out now, and Ill let you know how it is once I've downloaded it, but Im sure itll be awesome. Its very exciting because Microsoft finally got it right. Windows 7 is definitely how vista should have been, it is smooth, simple and easy to use for ANYONE... even my grandma. I definitely recommend everyone to get Windows Seven when it comes out because microsoft has learned from their mistake *cough* vista *cough* and is correcting them. Windows 7 will be, unlike vista, released with major compatibility, have amazing performance, a nice EASY UI, and work well overall.

Useful Command Prompt Commands

I've been reading up a bit recently on command prompt because it is very useful at times (especially when you have an obnoxious relative that wont let you install anything on their computer in order to fix it). And so I decided that I should post any useful commands that I find, on here.

At (at a certain time, perform a function) Ex: at 12:00 cmd /c shutdown -s -t 35 -c "The computer is shutting down."

Subst (Assign a drive letter to a folder) Self explanatory

Wireless Printing for the iPod Touch and iPhone!

HP has just released HP iPrint Photo for the appstore. It is a free application for all iPhone OS users. The goal of this program is to enable photo printing wirelessly, and does not include the ability to print documents... however, due to the nifty screenshot feature, printing documents could be possible.
Just download iPrint Photo from the appstore and take a screenshot of the document you want to print. Then head over to iprint photo and select that screen shot.
This could easily be the start of a printing revolution for the iPhone OS, as more people will most likely begin integrating printing into document applications.

Multi-Account Sign in in Windows Live Messenger!

Many of you will have several WLIDs, and want to sign into Messenger with more than one of them. Until now you had to seek refuge in a patch or add-on to be able to do so. Not anymore! Microsoft’s John Weisenfeld just shared a little trick with me to enable this, which I’m going to share with you.

The trick involves registry editing, so please follow these steps very carefully:

1. Start regedit (admin)
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Live
3. Right click Messenger and create a new DWORD called MultipleInstances

REcreateDWORD

4. Right click the newly added registry key and choose Modify
5. Set the Value data to 1

REeditDWORD

6. Close regedit

All done! Now you can launch Windows Live Messenger as many times as you want, and sign in with as many WLIDs you want, on one computer. Just don’t try to sign in with the same WLID more than once on one computer or it will throw error 80071392 at you!

Windows Seven Pre-Beta WinHEC released

The WinHEC (PDC in China) distribution of windows seven was leaked onto the popular torrent sites earlier this week. Build number is 6956. Improvements include all the features that the blue badge added to 6801 (but in their full working version) as well as a new boot screen and faster boot times.
The WinHEC release was given to all attendees as Virtual Machine file and was converted into an ISO using the 6801 build disc.

Windows Live Sync

Windows Live Sync was officially released today. Some users are reporting problems with installation on macs but overall I think the experience is decent. I'm sure all bugs will be worked out soon (although it probably should have gone to beta first).

The program on the PC does not have any GUI other than a settings page which includes encryption, remote access, and auto-start settings.

I've posted some questions regarding the differences between mesh and live sync on both the live mesh blog and the live sync blog, and I'll post their responses as soon as I see them.

My new sony vaio ns!

Hey everyone, wanted to announce that I just got my new sony vaio laptop on November 19th! It is really cool, it has a pentium dual core CPU, 3 GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and an integrated webcam and mic. It is really perfect for me... great for blogging on, surfing the web, and doing my everyday tasks. Windows Live mesh works great on it, as does office '07. I just upgraded it to vista ultimate and I look forward to upgrading to the windows seven beta when I come back from FL in January.

Today Apple released the iPhone and iPod Touch Firmware 2.2. This update works on all iPods that run iPhone OS and includes the following features:

Windows Live Mesh and Logmein NOW WORKING!!!

After hours of struggling trying to get windows live mesh and logmein working on my mac I have finally figured it out! I was browsing the web looking for kexts, and constantly asking the friendly (but not very talkative) users on irc.osx86.hu for the whereabouts of a solution to this problem when suddenly I found it.
On netkas.org I found the solution (or at least explanation) for my problem. I needed to use the correct version of applesmbios to enable logmein and mesh. I needed a different version for when I installed silverlight, but then I needed another new one.
After googling around for the correct kexts i finally found McKill.ca. It had links to many ToH kexts which I promptly downloaded and searched through to find AppleSMBIOS.kext. When I found it I immediately installed it using kext helper and rebooted.
Voila, it worked... upon boot logmein's logo loaded for the first time and windows live mesh asked me for my username and password. Every thing worked fine!

Download the kext I used either from the original site or from uploading.com respectively.

My New Laptop!

I am extremely excited because I just ordered my new laptop! I didnt exactly have enough money, but I ordered it anyway... I'll cross that bride when it smacks me in the face later.
Anyway, my new laptop is a Sony Vaio NS130. It has 3GB Ram, a 160GB HDD, Pentium Dual-Core CPU at 2.0 GHz, a 1.3mp Webcam, wireless n, and a DVD-DL burner.

I'm going to be doing a lot of new stuff to my laptop including setting up my multi-system, platform syncing (non-cloud) live mesh environment once windows seven is installed. I'll go through how-tos and what-to-dos with new laptops once I unpackage it, and requests for videos or how-tos on programs that I use, or even ones that I don't, will gladly be accepted.

Microsoft: Reflection on The Redmond Company

So, after watching Microsoft unveil all this new stuff at PDC 2008, and with all the hype about Microsoft right now, I figured I'd jot down my thoughts about them.
So far, I have been extremely impressed by how much Microsoft has improved everything that they do as a company - over the past year. I watched them first unveil windows live messenger beta 9 quite a while back, and I thought that it was really cool, but then later I saw them release the Tech Preview of Windows Live Mesh; I was blown away. I immediately began to use the preview of mesh, even though I only owned a single computer with one operating system at the time. It helped me to get files off my computer from school, and backup my important files online. Little did I know that this would turn out to be just a small achievement of the Redmond company.
Recently, Microsoft's two largest and best releases have been Windows Seven Build 6801 and the Windows Live Services. I am shocked by how improved wave 3 was compared to wave 2 (of windows live) and the azure site impressed me even more. Silverlight has really helped make all of Microsofts website look stellar and I'm sure it will push them back into the average home user's life.
On the topic of Windows Seven, I want to say just how much I love this operating system. I love how it has fixed every single bug I ever had on vista, I love its new countless features like the new calculator, paint, wordpad, superbar, aero peek, aero shake, jumplists, ie8, windows media player 12, system tray, network discovery, and... well, you get the point.
This operating system (in its full version), especially when integrated with windows live wave 3 (in its full version) will definitely make Microsoft a dominant company that controls the market, just like it did in the XP years, and like apple does now. Thankfully microsoft PCs are much less expensive then Apple computers!
I can't wait to buy windows seven when it comes out, and I also can't wait to try it on my new laptop... I mean; that's another story.

When I read this I began to think...
I visited the website Microsoft Mesh Pack as directed, where they ask you for a PDC code. I didnt believe I had one of these, so I began trying things that might make sense, like "live mesh" and "windows" and such. Then I realized something... It was mentioned to me before that we could use our windows vista beta codes to install windows 7, and so I decided to try using that code on this website... maybe that was the PDC code microsoft spoke of?
In short, it kinda worked. I gained full access to the Dev Center for windows live mesh and windows azure, but I couldnt seem to find links to download the 4 new applications anywhere.
I took a lot of screenshots of my endevour, please feel free to look at them; I'm sorry that they arent in order.

Add extra features to Windows Seven Build 6801

Last week, I revealed a weird protection scheme around some unfinished features in Windows 7 (build 6801). I provided a buggy tool to enable the new Taskbar, then teased everyone with other features such as gestures, panning, and Desktop Slideshow. It wasn’t intentional, I just needed some time to rework the unlocking tool, which went faster thanks to some code snippets from my Vize friend surrounding the headaches of TrustedInstaller and PendingFileRenameOperations.

As the dialog indicates, patched files are not backed up. I suggest all users back up, by copying into a temporary folder somewhere, the following files:

Windows Live Mesh for Mac

So, it seems that Windows Live Mesh Expanded to include Mac OS X 10.5.1 (or above) today.

Or, maybe they are just preparing by putting it in the dropbox??? I am going to switch over to my mac install from Vienna and I’ll keep you informed.

Mac version was released, beta version. Installation did not work on my hackintosh. This will be the end of my posting about mac live mesh until I can get it working on my mac.

After installing windows seven I had some compatibility issues with a lot of programs; I decided to post all of the programs that I've found to be compatible or incompatible with Windows Seven on here.

Windows Seven: First Impressions

Ok, so, if you have been following my blog lately you probably know that I have been switching operating systems pretty frequently as of late, and that I now have XP, Vista, Leopard (10.5.1) and Seven at my disposal. If you havent been reading, then I'll catch you up. I have recently installed leopard on my machine and converted my old vista installation to a virtual machine. The vista VM was very slow, so I decided that I needed a new operating system of some sort. I downloaded and installed windows seven build 6801 in VMware and it worked great so I decided to use it as a main operating system in my bootloader.
Now I have come down to a final solution. The following will be my installation plan for the next few months. I have decided to partition my 140GB HDD into 2 partitions. The partition scheme is as follows:
I will install Windows on Partition 1 using 60 GB and Leopard on Partition 2 using the remaining 80 GB. I will store my pictures and media files on my External HDD so they may be shared on both operating systems.
My windows partition will house my copy of windows seven milestone 3, and I will upgrade it when the official windows seven beta is released in december, and then to the final version of windows seven in late '09.
My mac partition will house mac osx leopard. It will include XP, Vista, and 98se in virtual machines. These will mainly be used for testing and helping people with computer problems.
I will be running windows live mesh to synchronize my documents folders between my two main operating systems, and I am using plaxo to sync contacts and calendars. iTunes and iPhoto will sync with my external HDD which will in turn sync with windows seven's pictures and media libraries. I'll be using address book and ical in mac (not entourage), and I'll use windows calendar and windows contacts in vienna (I like to refer to Windows Seven by its code name).

I also have some pictures of my windows seven virtual machine installation for you to look at while I go copy my Vista virtual machine's files over to my external HDD. They are not of any special new features or anything, just of the installation mostly.

Mac and PC can live together: Days 4, 5, and 6

Well, after a lot of work, too much if you ask me, I finally got everything working. Vista operates just fine, and everything is peachy.... well... kinda. I mean, it's very slow. I have to wait forever for it to load and operate correctly; it's quite a burden. I've decided to go back to a normal dual boot setup, but as you probably read in my previous post, it will no longer be with leopard and vista; I will have a shiny new Vienna and Leopard installation!
I look forward to getting Windows Se7en installed on my computer, even though it means that I'll have to re-install leopard. Thank goodness I bought that external HDD, I have a lot of backing up to do (don'cha know?). Hopefully everything will be back to normal operational status by the weekend, but I'll go with next week Wednesday at the latest.
On a side note, I'm really starting to like Minefield, but that's a topic for another day.

Windows Se7en Milestone 3

I recently downloaded windows seven (herein known as windows Se7en or Vienna) from a popular torrent site. The build is 6801. I installed it on a virtual machine on my new hackintosh and it works marvelously. I have never seen such an absolutely amazing operating system. The install was flawless, activation was flawless, and the desktop window management worked wonders! I used a patch posted on withinwindows.com to enable to new taskbar from build 6933 and it made the operating system even more stunning. I will have videos to post later, and many pictures of my experiences, but before those are all posted I would like to mention that this operating system will definitely constitute switching back to windows. I still love mac, but I think I'm going to have to go back to a legit dual boot, but this time with mac and vienna.
I'll be taking the video tonight and it'll be posted on youtube before the weekend.

Mac and PC can live together

So, after my recent success with getting Kalyway 10.5.1 up and running on my Dell, and then successfully getting dual booting to work, I decided to take Mac and my relationship to the next level. I could by now easily boot from Mac to Vista without a problem, and both OS's worked just fine.
I decided that it was time to upgrade to boot camp, parallels, or vmware fusion.
First, I decided to compare the 3. I had a spare desktop computer lying around that also happens to be a hackintosh, so I took said programs for a spin.

Boot camp:
Basically... it just didnt cut it. It was basically the same setup that I already had, and required a reboot to switch operating systems. I prefer the chameleon bootloader, with a regular vista and mac install.

Parallel desktop vs vmware:
Both are very nice applications and have similar features to each other. Both include desktop integration that I thought was rather nice (vmware had unity, parallels had convergence). I prefer unity over convergence because it integrated the application into mac osx, instead of just adding a taskbar to the bottom of the screen. It treated each application from windows separately and nicely, instead of just basically giving it its own separate location.
Another thing I loved about vmware was the 12 month free McAfee virus protection. I just recently ran out of my anti virus subscription (Ok, I didnt run out... I just kinda deleted Live OneCare because it was so bad) and so I needed protection from the vast expanse that is "the internet".
Anyway... after looking over the products I decided to go with vmware. I backed up my mac to time machine on my 500GB External HDD and copied my windows files over to the remaining space. Then I hopped onto vmwares help page looking for a quick start guide. Low and behold I found one.
Day One (Friday):
So, I began to follow the guide until about 1:12 into the video. I only selected my vista partition and moved on. Then I was presented with a message box that the guy in the video did not receive. It warned me that I could successfully copy this parition to a virtual disk, but I wont be able to boot because my partition was not active. This was because of my chameleon bootloader being installed on my mac partition and thus making partition 2 active. I quickly loaded up diskpart and made my first partition active. I grabbed a soda while I waited for my computer to reboot, and to my surprise it was rather quick...
Regardless, I loaded up vmware converter again and repeated the process and this time I got no error messages when I selected only my vista install partition. I should also mention that I resized the virtual disk to 60GB on that page (in case that effects me later).
As I proceeded through the video I got to the part that he says takes 1 minute per GB. I decided to leave it to do its thing and go to sleep.

Day two (Saturday):
I woke up, grabbed my breakfast, and got to work. VMware converter was finished, and now the video told me to boot into my mac. Sadly, my mac was on the current hard drive, and was only 40 GB large, so I decided to format my entire HDD so that I could use all 150GB. I ran the Kalyway 10.5.1 DVD like in my previous post. This time instead however, I clicked on options when partitioning my HDD and I chose GUID. On the customize page this time I left everything as it was and clicked install.
The installation took about 20 minutes and I was hoping that the install would succeed (the last time I tried to use GUID on a mbr HDD and so it didnt work).
Well... it was almost predictable. GUID did not work, so I booted kalyway dvd again and used MBR instead.
After the install I was presented with a black screen that said that darwin had failed to boot my volume or something like that... I figured it just had trouble changing to MBR from GUID so I rebooted and it loaded fine.
It asked me if I wanted to import data so I choose to import from my time machine backup.
Time Machine finished importing and everything loaded and worked just as it did before I formatted.
I installed vmware on my mac and it installed perfectly, the User interface was really cool.
Then I copied the Virtual Machine files to my mac from my External HDD. I opened up Fusion and followed the instructions to add my vista installation. The first time I booted vista after the installation it was extremely slow, so I added another virtual core and more RAM.

Day 3 (Sunday):
Worked on fusion for a few hours, but I was very busy today. My installation was very buggy and corrupt even when booting normally, and now it is quite messed up. I've decided to copy all my files to my mac and then reinstall windows. I will install Vista, XP, 2000, 98, and Ubuntu and I will detail all of my experiences in more posts.
Days 4, 5, and 6 will be in a new post.

Still no iPod Touch 2G Jailbreak

Sadly the iPod Touch 2G is still not Jailbreakable (have you been wondering why I haven't posted much about it lately?). The iPhone Dev Team is working hard, but they don't seem to be making much progress. I have a lead on a friend who thinks he's got it working, but I doubt it. I'll keep you informed.

Dual Boot Vista and OSX86 the Easy Way

This is a complete guide to correctly dual boot Windows Vista and Leopard (OSX86). The Hardware I used was a Dell Optiplex GX620 SFF, but this should work for most computers.
This guide has taken me over 3 weeks to write and I have tried every possible logical combination of customized installs, trust me, unless you know for a fact that your computer handles this differently (i.e. vanilla kernals): do it my way.

Disclaimer: This Guide is for educational purposes only, I suggest you buy yourself an actual Mac. Also please do not post links to the Torrent’s as they will be removed.

Well, before we proceed with the guide, here is the stuff that you will need for a successful dual boot setup.
• Vista Already installed on your Primary Hard Disk.
• Kalyway 10.5.1 DVD. (Download this at the usual place)
• Chameleon Bootloader
• Windows Vista Boot DVD (Just incase something goes wrong)
• Some computer knowledge (Power User)

Well now that you have everything ready, let’s get started then. Keep in mind that this will take quite a while so do yourself a favor and find something else to do while you wait. I will let you know approximately how long each step takes.

• Vista must be installed on your HDD and must be the ONLY Operating System on there. I will not discuss tri-booting.
• Right click on My Computer and Click on Manage. Select Disk Management. Now create a new volume for OSX by shrinking the existing vista volume (right-click>shrink). Right-click in the unoccupied space to create a new simple volume. I recommend somewhere around 40GB for typical use, and about 100GB for lots of media and programs.
• Now restart the machine and boot into the Leopard DVD that you burned using the Kalyway 10.5.1 DVD Image.
• Press F8 as the darwin countdown begins and type -v at the prompt and hit enter.
• You should see scrolling text on the screen now. If the scrolling text stops anywhere then this install may not work for you. Post where it stops or Google the error.
• After a while you should be looking at the Leopard Installer. Click the right arrow to continue. The loading bar will be present for about 90 seconds.
• Once the Loading Bar disappears Select Utilities -> Disk Utility.
• Select the new volume you created earlier and format it as MAC OSX Extended (Journaled). Now the volume will be ready to install Mac OSX
• Now get back to the Leopard Install Screen by closing disk utility. Choose the partition that you made in the beginning and follow the instructions on screen.
• DON’T CLICK INSTALL. Now we will need to change the installations boot type. Click customize and change the bootloader from GUID to MBR. Make sure GUID is now unchecked. Don’t check anything else.
• Now click install… wait about 10 seconds and skip the disk check.
• The installation process will take about 25 minutes. When you come back you will most likely be greeted with a welcome screen. Click OK and continue to set up your new Mac as you would like.
• When you have finished setting up your mac you may find that you need drivers for video, audio, network, etc. to find these please google what you need or search it at the insanelymac.com forum.
• Now we will need to install the new bootloader so that you can also run vista. Please install chameleon now.
• Now you should be able to boot into both Mac and vista when you turn on your computer.

If something goes wrong and you can't boot into vista and you need to get in anyway, open terminal and execute the following commands :
fdisk -e /dev/rdisk0
flag 1
quit
reboot

If you're like me, caps lock is rarely used on the iPhone but sometimes you just need the next couple of letters to be capitalized. A good example is if you're typing out something like "OK" or "IM", or any number of other upper-case abbreviations. Thankfully, iPhone's multi-touch is smart enough to allow you use the shift key just like you can on a computer. Simply hold down the shift key while you type on the iPhone's keyboard and every letter will be capitalized.

I've got to say thanks to iPhone Alley for pointing this out, I know I'll be using this trick a lot.

Easily Install Mac OSX on Dell Optiplex GX620 SFF (OUTDATED)

Today I am going to show you how to install and dual boot Kalyway 10.5.1 (OSX Leopard) onto your Dell PC. My system specs are:
Optiplex GX620 SFF (small form factor)
2.5GB Ram
3.0 GHz Pentium 4 HT CPU
160GB HDD
default intel onboard graphics chip
VGA output ^

I have vista installed already (home premium) and nothing else (not xp or linux).

What you will need:
Kalyway 10.5.1
Chameleon Bootloader
Vista Preinstalled (or XP)

Step 1: Prepare your PC
You will need to shrink your XP/Vista Partition.
To do this in vista right click my computer and go to manage.
In XP you will need to find another program to shrink it because xp doesnt have this feature.
From there click disk management.
Choose your vista disc and rick click it>shrink partition
Choose a reasonable size of your liking. (I recommend about 40 GB)
Right click your new partition and create a new volume.

Step 2: Install
Turn off your PC and place the kalyway disc into the Drive
Press F8 when prompted and then enter -v
after about 8-10 minutes you will see the installer
open up disc utility from the menu bar and format your new partition (erase)
Now proceed through the installation until you are given two choices, install and customize. Select customize and select the MBR bootloader instead of the GUID bootloader.
Now click the install button.

Step 3: Final Procedure
about 20-25 minutes later you will be presented with the setup screen
set it up as you would like and then when it loads the OS open up iTunes. It will ask you to update, click yes or OK.
Then you will be presented with a few updates (probably 6)
Choose everything but the last one which should be 10.5.5
Do not update to 10.5.5 yet, we will do this in my next post in a week or so.
Once the updates are done please reboot the computer as it asks.
When your computer boots back up please install chameleon.

Now your computer will dual boot with Vista and Leopard.

My Rant Against Apple

Alright, someone had to say it. I think it has gone on long enough. Apple has gone too far with their "get a mac" ads, and especially with the validity of their commercials. I have been using vista since 1 month prior to its official release and I have seen it grow into an absolutely amazing operating system. I used to enjoy the get a mac ads, they were funny and valid, and very cool to watch. I would always unmute the TV when a mac ad came on so that I could watch it... I always loved the apple guy.
Now everything has changed. Apple has lost all of their creativity and had to find something to gnaw on while they thought of something new... they found vista. When vista started up it did indeed have a lot of bugs, and some were very unpleasant. Apple exploited this weakness, and especially given the fact that Microsoft did nothing to counteract the torment; vista's reputation went down the drain only 2 months after release.
Now, vista is a wonderful operating system, with barely any bugs, especially as compared to how it was before. There are two major bugs left in my opinion - which I will point out to attempt to prove that my views are unbiased - and they are:

1) Slow file transfer/copying
2) Trouble moving/deleting/copying files that claim to be in use, even though they aren't.

Lets look at the mac side shall we? Of course the apple operating system is flawless right? Quite honestly, I am unable to answer that question myself. I dont own a mac, so I cannot point out any bugs. I can however point out many bugs in other apple products, but due to apples primary concern being making money, rather than customer satisfaction/appreciation - they still have not fixed them.

1) iPhone/iPod Touch clock sync bug. Every time you plug in your ipod to itunes, the date will set itself back approximately 15-35 days.
2) iTunes intense slowness. I have never seen iTunes work as fast as it should, even though windows media player and others work just fine. I dont understand why it takes so incredibly long to find search results in the iTunes Store when google can find millions of results in .03 seconds.
3) Wifi problems on the iPod Touch 2G. Requires the user to turn the Wifi on and off twice before it will work again. A reboot rarely fixes this.
4) No flash player on iPhone? Seriously wtf mate?
5) No notes sync (unless you have leopard ($149) and mobileme($99))
And many more...

Vista works great for me, and my system is more than 2 years old. It doesn't have a vista compatible sticker on it and dell doesn't even ship vista with this model, however, it works great.

Here are some things that I require from Apple before I will ever be able to buy a mac in good conscience:

- Focus more on the customer, not on the money they bring.
- Sell OSX for Dells and other Computers... you'd end up making more money from people that would never end up buying a mac anyway.
- Stop killing competition, in a capitalist society it is necessary to compete for business. Apples grip over the Appstore is horrific and needs to be loosened.
- Quit ragging on other companies products in order to gain customers; this is the world of computers, not politics. Every time I listen to your damn ads I see noses beginning to grow longer. If you guys need to destroy other businesses in order to increase your own sales... well, I guess that doesnt say much about your confidence in your product does it?
- Listen to your feedback! We submit that stuff for a reason, it is a huge list of what we (the customers) want, and it means that you can make more money by making it for us. Apple, add a radio, use the bluetooth, integrate features of the jailbreak, and then create a new design and - boom! - you've got a new device that you can easily sell to millions of people for 300 bucks each!

I hope this impacts some of your decisions on whether you should get a mac or not... if I were you, I would go out and install osx on a pc... maybe if we do it enough then Apples capitalistic side will show and they will realize that they probably should remove the EFI restrictions and start to sell OSX for all computers.

iPhone Dev-Team Posts Progress

Well, sort of....
This morning at about 6am eastern time (which is 3am pacific, which leads you to wonder what they are doing up so late) the iPhone Dev Team posted their thoughts on the new 2.2 firmware betas and the iPod Touch 2G jailbreak.
There is good news, and there is bad news. Good news is, firmware 2.2 is pwnable on all devices that currently support pwnage tool... bad news is that they still haven't found a way to jailbreak the iPod Touch G2, or unlock the iPhone 3G. They seem confident, and I have faith in them, but I wont be able to stand it to have to wait as long as others have had to for the 3G unlock. The future seems gloomy for this new iPod, and we need someone to help us through this. Come on guys, we know you can do it!

Even with the extremely recent release of iPhone OS 2.1, Apple has already begun to seed v2.2 to developers. v2.2 is rumored to include more bug fixes, push notifications and more GPS features. Don't get your hopes up for push notification though; iPhone OS 2.1 had them, but apple took them away.
Strangely, in this photo posted by GearLive it seems that you cannot download an iPod Touch G2 version, only G1. Maybe apple has other plans for the G2.

iPod Touch G2 Still not Jailbreakable

The iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team still haven't been able to Jailbreak the new iPod Touch. The new processor has destroyed the exploit that was found in the old processor, so the method that pwnage used no longer works on the new iPod. Hopefully they will find a way soon... very soon. In my opinion an iPod Touch G2 is worth only half as much as a Jailbroken G1 on 2.1
The speakers are quite amazing though.

Thoughts on iPod Touch firmware 3.0

Heres a combination of my thoughts and Bkram1's thoughts on what should be in the new iPod/iPhone 3.0 software:

* Start up times - These things almost take 5 minutes to start up some times, they need to be able to start in 1 minute at the most!
* Stuck in the boot screen - Sometimes, you turn off your device and when you turn it back on, it’s stuck at that apple logo! You cannot do anything except restore which means losing all of your data, music, videos, Apps, etc.
* Copy and Paste - We know it’s not that hard Apple! We’ve seen third party developers do it, why can’t you?
* Podcasts - You should be able to download and subscribe to podcasts while you are not at your computer, if you are on a holiday, how are you supposed to get all of the latest episodes?
* Improved Springboard management - There needs to be a better way to manage your Applications instead of the annoying wiggle feature.
* Search - You should be able to search through your music library! You can do it on the iPod Classic, iPod Nano and even on the Remote App! Who can’t we search through the music on our iPhone/iPod Touch?
* 5 icon dock - This would be very nice, it’s the main reason I jailbreak my iPhone at the moment
* Themes - You should be able to customise the theme of the iPhone/iPod Touch. This is why a lot of people jailbreak. People like to personalise their things.
* More camera control - You should be able to zoom, focus, etc.
* Video - Why can’t you record videos? You can do it when it’s jailbroken!
* Push notifications - This was supposed to be in 2.1. Where is it?
* Respect the developers - Let them do a bit more, they are restricted by all of Apples rules
* Bluetooth - You should be able to use Bluetooth with your friends
* Sync over WiFi - When you walk into your house. your device gets updated automatically
* MMS - You can do this on most of the basic phones, why can’t the iPhone do it?
* iChat built in - Why not? We would have to use faulty third party IM Apps.
* Support for Nike + in the iPhone - It has Bluetooth, why can’t it support Nike +?
- iPod icon on iPod Touch (not music and videos)
- Voip for iPod Touch (basically the same as your less restrictions for devs)
- ability to sync notes with program of choice such as OneNote, or even something built into iTunes
- Use Free space on iPod as USB Drive
- Flashplayer/silverlight… (more importantly, the ability for plugins to be installed
- Full-Screen Safari
- A better notes application…. I mean, come on…. Apple can do better than a legal pad.
- A poof like application that allows you to hide ANY app or lock ANY app with a password. Good for parental controls (on anything) and good for hiding private data incase lost or stolen. (You could lock preferences.app, which would be very helpful)

My thoughts on the next iPod Touch (gen 3)
- GPS
- More memory - 256MB?
- IEEE 802.11n (wireless n)
- camera
- better speakers…. apple: drill some holes!
- Wifi anywhere (ok, not exactly what I mean… I mean the ability to purchase a 3G chip of sorts that would allow you to use the 3G network for Internet. It wouldn’t be for phones/calling, although you could use voip probably, it would be the iPhones plan with only Data… maybe something like 8-15 dollars a month, or maybe charge per minute) I think this would be pretty revolutionary (isn’t that what apple is about?) It would be similar to todays laptop cards that let you use a mobile service provider to get internet on the road.

This goes for apple products in general:
- Allow iTunes to sync your iPod with Windows Calendar
- Make MobileMe free…. Seriously, Windows live mesh is….

Most of these features should be pretty easy for Apple to implement into the next firmware, hopefully they release the next major update by the end of the year. What do you think?

iPod Touch G2 does not work with all chargers

I have a Non-Apple iPod Touch Charger and a Non-Apple iPod Touch Dock. I recently sold my iPod Touch Gen 1 to a friend to buy my new Touch, and I brought it home and plugged it into my PC to charge. It charged to about 80% and then I took it to my room and put it on my dock. A warning symbol came up (it looks like the topic's icon) and it said that "charging is not supported with this accessory". Then I plugged it into my wall charger and it displayed the same thing.

I think apple has not allowed this new device to use anything but Apple accessories, so be warned - those of you who have older docks... they wont work on this new iPod Touch 2G.
This may be because they don't want to be sued for someone saying that the ipod doesn't get 36 hours of battery life, so they make sure that they MUST use verified chargers... or maybe the new iPod can detect if the wattage/output is not exactly right.
We'll see what happens with this....

Jailbreak iPod Touch 2.1

2.1 has finally been Jailbroken! This tutorial will allow you to use cracked apps and Cydia and Installer 4 on your 2.1 iPod Touch (not iPhone yet)!!!!!!!!!!!!

JAILBREAKING 2.1 STILL ALLOWS YOU TO KEEP ALL YOUR MUSIC/VIDEO/CONTACTS/ETC. INTACT

This method only works on computers that can use Quickpwn (the dev team release).

- First of all you have to be on 2.1 on a FIRST GEN iPOD TOUCH! NO SECOND GENERATIONS.
- Download these files http://rapidshare.com/files/144550778/QuickPwnRC3.zip.html Its quickpwn with some bundled extras. (All Credit goes to jfb392 for the bundle)
- Alternative links:
- Once downloaded, extract the .zip files with an archiver, you can use any. If you don't have one, download WinRAR, and install it.
- Run QuickPwn. Choose iPod Touch. Then when it asks you to browse for the IPSW (iPod Software) file, pick the 2.1 Firmware file, and then go next.

*Note* The 2.1 firmware file should be located in C:\Users\%username%\Appdata\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\

- Once the QuickPwn process is done, the Pineapple, and then Spinning wheel should be up for a while, and it should reboot... don't worry it's fine.
- Now when your iPod reboots, installer and cydia wont be there!!! Dont worry... that should happen.
- Now download iphonebrowser

- Now on iPhoneBrowser, connect to the iPod and go to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework
- Back-up your original mobileinstallation by copying it to your computer. Make sure not to copy it into a directory where the patched mobileinstallation file is.
- Drag over the patched mobileinstallation file and overwrite the old one.

*note* make sure you overwrite. DO NOT DELETE AND THEN COPY, you must overwrite the file.

- Reboot your ipod and you've got a Jailbroken 2.1 iPod Touch

Use iPod/iPhone as a Wifi Adapter

"iPhone Tunnel Suite" is an amazing piece of software.
I highly recommend it.

Let's get started:

*Make sure you have OpenSSH already installed and running on your jailbroken device*

1) Install iPhone Tunnel Suite and run the software

2) Click the "iPhone Tunnel" button

3) Log into your device using your OpenSSH username and password

4a) Now, in the program you're using to access the internet (Firefox, IE (bleh), and even bitorrent clients (works fine in my Azureus)) set up the proxy to use "127.0.0.1" as the SOCKS Proxy (version 5) and "1080" as the port.

4b) If you're in Firefox, type in "about:config" into the address bar, paste "network.proxy.socks_remote_dns" into the "Filter" box, and doubleclick on the entry in order to set it to "true" (if it is already set to true, you do not nee to do anything)

7) Enjoy your internet connection, tunneled through your iPod/iPhone!

ZiPhone shown to cause harm to iPhone and iPod Touch

The iphone dev team has just linked to a blog that has a post that is basically a rant against zibri. Compare it to Zibri's "facts" and then read the other post and then see who you believe.

Basically, ZiPhone uploads data to the iphone's Memory in a place where it shouldn't and clogs it up. This causes errors in the memory and then question becomes "When is my iphone going to crash?" instead of "Will my iphone crash?".

New iPod Models to come out before Christmas

According to many sources new iPod models will be comming out before Christmas this year. So far we know of a new iPod Nano, and a new iPod Touch. All iPods will see a price drop to due to the new low price of the iPhone, and the iPod Touch will receive a new design and a $100 price drop. Hopefully new features will be added into this model of the iPod Touch, and I have drawn some concept art to illustrate what I hope will be included.

The things I think are most important are Bluetooth and voice chat... all we can do is hope.
More things that have been confirmed so far are:
1) The iPod Touch Gen 2 (When released) will ship with the 2.1 software pre-installed.
2) The new iPod Nano will have a much larger screen ratio then it has had before

I will add things as apple confirms them

I can't wait, if the new iPod Touch has more features then Ill easily hand over $200 for it.

QuickPwn Tool for Windows

As posted earlier on the iphone dev team blog, QuickPwn has just been released! Basically, it works like ZiPhone used to work, but has a GUI like the Mac Pwnage Tool. It will actually hack into your device and Jailbreak it without Restoring the firmware!
Currently it only works on 2.0.1, but I decided to give it a try on 2.0.2
I'll update this post as I work on it!

Phase 1:
Run the QuickPwn GUI.
On first glance, the App looks a lot like Pwnage Tool and Winpwn 2.5:

and upon clicking browse on the next screen (after clicking the blue arrow in the bottom corner) I saw a file locator and navigated to the location you see in the picture:

Woah!
Thats right, it is native and doesnt mess up the icon appearence when you dont have 5.

Edit: I got someone who asked how I did this (in the comments) and hoped that it wasn't kate... sadly it was kate that I was using, so I decided to go searching for another way to get a 5 icon dock without the need for a buggy program like Kate... Well, I found it!
Saurik (the creator of Cydia) has just released a "5 icon dock" application under the Telesphoreo source

and it works extremely well... all it does is enable the 5th icon, and nothing else. If you suddenly change your mind and dont want the 5th icon then all you have to do is take it off the dock and now you have 4.

MobileFinder on Appstore!

MobileFinder (The awesome iPhone version of the mac finder application) that was first released on Installer.app has now been released on the Appstore. It works even better than the original finder, and can run text files, pdf's, Microsoft Office Documents, iWork Documents, and more. The only limitation it has, and I'm certain was only put in place so it could get on the Appstore is that the only directory you can view is /private/var/mobile/Applications/(MobileFinder)/
If you are jailbroken then you can remove this limitation! All we need to do is add a Symlink into the folder!
When you are finished you will see a shiny new "Root" Folder in MobileFinder that you can use to navigate to /

Things you will need:
A Jailbroken 2.0 or 2.0.1 iPod Touch or iPhone.
MobileFinder ($2.00, but completely worth it... trust me... I'm quite froogle)
WinSCP (Current Version)

Step 1:
Open up WinSCP and login as you would normally. If you don't know how then check out this tutorial on youtube

Step 2:
Navigate to MobileFinder's Application folder (it will be inside /private/var/mobile/applications) and then open the Documents directory.

Step 3:
Create a new link (right click > new > link)
In the first line put Home, and in Line 2 type "/" (with no ")

Now you have modded MobileFinder to work anywhere! Congratulations!

Optional Step:

If you want to make a fast and easy link to access your iPod directly from windows (without winscp) then do this:

1) Tap the transfer icon in the bottom right
2) Click Start when you see this:

3) Now right click on your desktop and go to New>Shortcut
4) Type in: explorer.exe ftp://000.000.0.000:0000 (replace the 0's with the correct number highlighted in green on your iPods Screen. It will most likely be something like 192.168.1.00:2121)

Now you will have a desktop icon to access your iPod with through XP or vista's built in explorer.

iPod Touch: so what now?

Ok, so you just got Winpwn 2.0.0.4, you pwned your iPod with the new firmware, and you have installer and everything. Now you might be wondering... what is so great about this? What can I do with it now?
Well, I'm just about to show you!
To begin, you all should have this image as your homescreen:

The first thing I do is I configure my Wi-fi.
To do this, open up settings>Wi-Fi>(My SSID) and then type in your password if needed.
Now you should be on Wifi.
What I like to do now is install the basic needs of any Jailbroken device. Let's open up Cydia. When you first open Cydia you will most likely get an Essential upgrade message like this:

Go ahead and click Upgrade, and then confirm (top-right).
When everything is done upgrading, click return to Cydia. Now click on the Changes tab on the bottom. Almost everyone should find a few changes available. Just click upgrade all, and then confirm.
Now we can actually install what we want to install! :D
Click Close Window and then move to the Install tab. In Utilities install Customize, Bossprefs, and Transformer.
In Terminal Support install MobileTerminal.
In Networking install openSSH.
Now press The Home button.
You should see all of your new apps there right? Just kidding... you shouldn't see any change yet. You need to respring. Sadly, since we cant use Bossprefs yet.. we have to perform a full scale system reboot. Go ahead and do that.
When you return from your only short reboot ever (the more apps you have the longer a reboot takes) please open Settings>General>AutoLock. Set that to 5 or Never. You will need one of those unless you have insomnia installed.
Now return to Home. You should see all your new applications there. I have a certain order I like, so I'll go ahead and set that up now.
For those who are curious, I like it like this:

Cool right? :D But now some of you caught something... I have an iPod app instead of a Music and video icon. To do this, open up Transformer (it's on page 2) and click: combine media apps. Then Respring.
Cool! Now we have a nice Jailbroken iPod with some cool apps on it. Are we done? Not even close!
Now go ahead and set up your mail, get all your basic apps functioning as they should, and Ill update you further in a few minutes.

Ok, welcome back... now lets set up bossprefs.
Open it up and click Understood (read it first, its there for a reason).
Now turn on Wi-Fi, and SSH and keep Bluetooth and Edge off. Click Config and turn off Edge, New Edge Toggle, 3G, and Bluetooth.
Now Open up your favorite SSH Program (like WinSCP) and lets do some modding. Don't worry, it will be easy for those of you who are Technologically challenged. Normally I'd say, lets go in and add features to the Preferences app... but I think that could be too difficult for some of you, so I wont go there. If you want me to post that anyway, let me know and Ill make another post about it later. It may be tricky using winSCP with your iPod the first time, but if you mess around with it enough it'll work.
Now what we are going to do is we are going to modify the iPod to accept Custom/Cracked applications. To do that please follow the guide located here
Now guess what? You're done! Just sync your iPod to your PC and thats it, you'll have the cracked apps, and a nicely setup iPod Touch.

Winpwn 2.0.0.4 Released!

Just yesterday CMW released version 2.0.0.4 of the Windows version of pwnage tool, otherwise known as Winpwn. It now can pwn the new 2.0.1 firmware for the iPod Touch and iPhone. For instructions on how to pwn, please go to the Winpwn main site and use one of the tutorial links there.
Features of the 2.0.1 firware are: bugfixes
Features of the new winpwn are: - Root partition resize support, Installer support, xp and vista support (64 bit included), and support for 2.0.1.
For those of you who don't know what the root partition resizing means... I'll try and simplify it for you. Basically, you can adjust the amount of space that is given to applications.

Install Custom .ipa files onto your iPod Touch/iPhone

Custom (Cracked) Games and Apps [IPA version]

This how to add the custom ipa games and apps to your iPhone/iPod Touch

How to guide:

1. You need to be on jailbroken 2.0 with Cydia installed. (If on a Mac use PwnageTool and if on Windows use WinPwn)

2. Now install OpenSSH. Click on Cydia and then click Install(Sections)>Networking>OpenSSH then click Install>Confirm (if you get a running out of disk space error click “ok”) Then click close window. Now click on the home button.

3. Now log into WinSCP (if you dont know how watch this) The first time you try to login you may get a connection timeout error, click retry and it should work. If you still get an error reboot your iPod/iPhone and try again.

4. Create a folder called Documents in /var/mobile/ and set permission to 777

5. Create a folder called Documents in the /Applications folder and set permissions to 777. This will fix the Disk Full error message seen when launching the game.

6. Now go to “/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework”

7. Rename the file “MobileInstallation” to “MobileInstallation.bak”

8. Download this patched file - HERE

9. Place the patched file into the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework folder and set the permissions 775 for the patched MobileInstallation file

10. Reboot your iPhone/iPod Touch- IMPORTANT!

———Note: You will only need to do the above steps once———

11. Download cracked Games and Apps from Update: below scroll down :)

12. Download at least one App from the App Store (Free or Paid) IMPORTANT: Otherwise you will get an error! [Only need to do this once]

13. Double click on the cracked .ipa you downloaded

14. Sync your iPhone/iPod Touch and enjoy!

Errors:

The application “XXXXXXX” cannot be opened
Fix: Reboot your iPhone or iPod

0xE800001 Error:

FIX: Change usb port and reboot your iphone/ipod Touch.
If this doesn’t work try going into: Control panel->System->Device Manager->Universal Serie Bus Controller->Right click Apple Mobile Device USB Driver and update driver.

Editors Note: I also recieved this error when I tried copying both the .app and the .ipa to my iPod. You can only have ONE! (I recommend the .ipa because it will remain on when you format, .apps must be installed again.)

0xE800013 Error:

You get this error when you already have the app
FIX: Simply delete the .app folder that u have ssh’d and reboot.

(EDIT: I CANNOT AND WILL NOT POST THE GAMES/APPS HERE, IT IS ILLEGAL, AND IS NOT CONDONED BY THIS SITE. I will however, mention that a quick search for ipa on your favorite torrent site would suffice.) Windows Mojave Experiment

Recently Microsoft set out to prove that Windows Vista really isn't as bad as people think it is, and actually prove that it is great, and easy to use.
What they did was they asked 140 people about Windows Vista and how they would rate it. Most people gave it a 0/10. Then they gave Windows "Mojave" to the 140 people and told them it was the next new Windows, then gave each of them a 10 minute demo that successfully convinced them to switch to their current OS to Mojave. Almost all of the people rated Windows Mojave a 10/10.
Then the representatives from Microsoft told the people that Windows mojave actually was Windows Vista.
Well.... I guess vista isn't so bad after all.... :D

Mediafire gets greedy

I have been an avid mediafire fan since December of '07 and they have remained free and easy to use the whole time, but I guess everyone gets greedy...
I remember when rapidshare was free, megaupload was free, and more.
Then I found mediafire and fell in love with it because it had more features than rapidshare and megaupload... and it was free.
Now that all has changed. Mediafire has gotten greedy and has blocked access to features it used to provide for free such as SSL, Direct DL links, and no ads.
Now you must pay about 70 dollars a year for that.
I guess they feel that it would be worth it for the free users because they get a new GUI for uploading stuff... I only have one thing to say to that; I need a new host for my files.

How to: create ipod.app for ipod touch (including 2.0)

Today I will show you how to change the music and videos icons into one iPod.app.

Step 1a (2.0 only) : Open up /private/var/stash/Applications.uKJtRx

Step 1b (1.1.x only) : Open up /Applications/

Step 2 : Inside you will find Mobilemusicplayer.app (open it)

Step 3 : Copy the info.plist file (download here) to the folder and say yes to overwrite. Now respring (you can use Bossprefs from Cydia)

You're done. Now you have ipod.app

Edit: For those of you having trouble finding stash, then do this:
Go to root, and press ctrl+a then go to commands>clear caches. (This works in WinSCP)
Then, you can just use the Applications folder in the root instead of stash.

Edit: Someone has made an application in Cydia that does this for you (on 2.0) it is called MobileMusicPlayer Flip. It is found in Tweaks.

Jailbreak your iPod Touch or iPhone 2.0

THe iPhone 2.0 software has just recently come out, and for those of you on macs, it is extremely easy to jailbreak your device because pwnage tool 2.0 came out a while back. What I am going to do is explain how to easily Jailbreak your device on a windows computer.
First, you will need a couple things.
1) Winpwn (winpwn.com)
2) ipod/iphone 2.0 software (google this, I cannot provide a link)

Once you have those two things, you will need to open winpwn, and click "build ispw".

This is where it gets a little tricky. If you have an iPod, then continue reading. If you have an iPhone, then I will refer you to iClarified for their guide on iPhones.

So, if you have come this far, then you have an iPod Touch, the new ipod firmware, winpwn 2.0.x, and you have clicked ispw builder.
Now select the firmware file, and check install cydia.
Now click build ispw on the bottom left.
After a little while, your new ispw will be finished, and you can now click iPwner.
Select the file you just created with ispw builder, and it will pwn itunes to accept custom firmware.
Now place your ipod in DFU mode. If you dont know how to do this, then follow these instructions, otherwise skip the next step.

To enter DFU: Make sure your ipod is on. Now hold both sleep and home for exactly 10 seconds. Then, let go of sleep and continue holding home until itunes says it found your device and it must be restored. Your iPod screen should be completely black. If it shows a connect to itunes logo on its screen then you are in restore mode... not DFU.

Now click ok in iTunes and then shift+click Restore. Then select your new custom firmware file... and wait about 15 minutes.
You now have a shiny new ipod touch with cydia!

For those of you who feel left out of the loop on the iphone and itouch jailbreaking and stuff... dont worry. I will be posting more about it asap. If you cant wait long enough for me to tell you how to jailbreak 2.0 on windows or even mac, then just post here and Ill respond back to your question.
I'm just going to say 2 things before I have to go.

In the past week or so I have found some absolutely incredible applications and programs that I garentee you I will use (and you should as well) for the next few years. Im just going to list them out for you, and then try to explain them, even though words cannot describe their greatness.
1) Windows Live Mesh
2) Orb Live
3) Intelliscreen
4) Trillian Astra

Windows Live Mesh is a new website that is under developement by Microsoft, basically it is a "mesh" of all your devices (PC's, windows mobile phones, Macs). It allows you to syncronize files between your devices, remote desktop your devices, and it even gives you a live desktop (or a cloud) which acts as a 5GB online storage device.

Orb Live is an amazing application that allows you to access all your media, files, and more over the internet. You can also stream Live TV, watch Internet TV, stream Media to your iPod Touch/iPhone, or even watch whats happening at your home computer (via your home webcam). Remember, it lets you do this from anywhere, so long as you have your orb accounts login and password.

Intelliscreen is an application made completely for the iPod Touch and iPhone. This app lets you view weather, ical, sports, news and more all from the lockscreen.

Trillian Astra is by far the best Instant messaging application ever known to man. it has the best user interface (looks the nicest), includes the most useful features, and has the best overall performance.
This app is in private beta/alpha, so it might be a good idea to visit your favorite torrent site in order to obtain it.

Download Youtube Videos Easily

Did you ever think that it would be possible to download youtube videos as MP4 files? I mean, I know that you knew it was possible to download them as FLV's, but come on, MP4?
Yes, its true, and guess what... It doesnt require any extra programs to be installed, and it doesnt need any special browser or anything. All you need is the Javascript capability. Trust me, you probably have that already.
All you have to do is go to the youtube video you want to download on youtube.com. Then enter this code into your browser window. A link to download the file will appear right on the youtube page!

Aviary Photo Editor

Touchpad Pro

I recently stumbled upon Touchpad, an Application made for the iPod Touch and iPhone that is based off of VNsea. Basically, what this app does is it allows you to control your mouse with your iPod. Very recently however, there was a huge update from Touchpad to Touchpad Pro, which made the program even better. It has tons of features, and is definitely a neccessary application for the iPod Touch and iPhone. The UI is amazing, and the remote feature is the BEST!

How to jailbreak your new iPod Touch or iPhone

Ok, here we go.
I'm going to assume that you just bought this new device, and are at one of the newer firmwares that came with it (such as 1.1.3, or 1.1.4) If you are on either 1.1.1, or 1.1.2 then please skip to step 2.
This guide will guide you through everything I would go through to get an iPod/iPhone jaibroken, and with awesome apps.
I am currently doing this as I write it, so you have comfirmation that everything I tell you to do works.
I did not discover all the things in my tutorial, I learned all this from ipodtouchfans.com, ipodtouchmaster, ipodtouchhacks.com, and Questor from the ziphone IRC. If I am missing anyone, or you think you deserve credit, then please let me know ASAP.

Lets begin shall we?
First, I need to mention that Step One does not work with iPhones. You will have to get 1.1.1 some other way. If you have an iPhone, I Recommend ziphone.

Step 1: (Downgrading to 1.1.1)
Download this ispw file

Extract it using winrar
Make sure iTunes is closed (not just minimized)
Open the folder, and run iphuc.exe
Type in (dont paste): enterrecovery
Then type filecopytophone WTF.s5l8900xall.RELEASE.dfu
and finally type: cmd go
now close iphuc, and open iTunes (the version of iTunes DOES NOT MATTER)
iTunes Should pop up telling you to restore your iPod. Click OK
Now, Hold Shift, and Click Restore.
Select the first file we downloaded earlier.
Let it procede in restoring to 1.1.1
*Note: It is currently restoring, which means it is deleting EVERYTHING off of your iPod.

Step 2: (Jailbreaking 1.1.1)
You do not need to sync right now, we can do that later. Go ahead and cancel the sync.
Open Safari on your iPod
Navigate to Jailbreakme.com
Scroll to the bottom, and click "Install AppSnap"
If nothing happens, and it returns you to the homepage, just do that again until it works.
It should now say Downloading...
Then your iPod will reboot.
Now you have installer.app!

You can stop now if you like, and just use 1.1.1, but if you like the new 1.1.3 interface and want to continue then go ahead... I did. If you choose not to continue then some things that I recommend you install for 1.1.1 are Customize, SMBPrefs, DropCopy, MobileChat, Mobile Preview, MobileTextEdit, and Sketches.

Step 3:
Upgrading to 1.1.2
Open Installer
Let it refresh, and then click update now if prompted
Click Ok, your iPod will reboot
Open Installer again
Donate if you like...
Now, install BSD Subsystem from SYSTEM.
Click Ok, and let it install.
Now install Community Sources from sources.
Now install OpenSSH through SYSTEM
Click Ok, and press Home
Now open installer again, and install oktoprep from Tweaks (1.1.1)
Now download the 1.1.2 firmware from this website
While you wait for that to download, make sure you dont install anything from installer, and i dont recommend Syncing.
Go into settings (I know you havent finished downloading yet)
go to general>autolock. Choose never.
Now, when the download finishes, open iTunes and Shift Click Update
*Note* Dont shift click restore, it will screw up the oktoprep utility.
Now select the 1.1.2 file we downloaded, and let it update.
When its done updating, run windows.bat from this rar file
It takes about 10 minutes to finish, and then your iPod will restart 3 times.
If it seems like you dont have installer.app, just wait and itll reboot again.

Now you have a jailbroken 1.1.2 device.

Step 4: (Jailbreak 1.1.3)
Now, open installer, and run the official 1.1.3 upgrade
Once installed, press home and restart springboard.
Now, run the upgrade package and click Yes (because you didnt sync right?)
It will take anywhere from 35 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, make sure you have your iPod connected to a power source, and you changed auto-lock to never.
When its finished, you now have a jailbroken 1.1.3 device. It isnt possible to update to 1.1.4 yet with this method, but it will be eventually im sure.
Now we will install all the awesome apps and everything

Step 5: (Awesome applications and sources)
Install the following things through installer:
Community Sources, 1.1.3/4 safari patch, MobileChat, BSD Subsystem, Customize, iPod Customize Fix, TouchPad Pro, iPhone 1.1.3 Apps.
Also, you will need the following sources:
m8an.de/installer.xml, ipodtouchmaster.com/files/repo.xml, .us/index.xml, .com/index.xml, apptapp.saurik.com

Make Internet Explorer go faster

And now to the fun part.
Here is how to make internet explorer go a lot faster then it currently does. This especially helps if you use multiple tabs instead of multiple browser windows.
This hack works on ie5, ie6, and ie7. It works on 2000, xp, and vista (maybe older too, idk)
This really does work, almost all my web pages load about 10 times faster now.... all of them are less then 1 minute! (Just kidding... I mean 1 second)
What it does, is it sets IE to use 16 connections instead of 4. This isnt enabled by default, because "If everyone who uses IE would use 16 connections it would slow down the internet"

I would post the file you need to download, but i cant post .reg files. So, save the text at the bottom as a .reg file using notepad; Then run it. Please remember that adding anything into the registry can be dangerous, so please be careful, and check the file over before running it to make sure you are ok with what its doing.
I am not responsible if you run this wrong, and screw up your registry... idk how anyone could be dumb enough to, but what ever....

Apples new iPods

Well, one thing is for sure, apples new iPhone and iPod touch are the latest and coolest gadgets out there to date. They are very cool, and have a few features, but first a word of warning
I do not recommend the iPod or iPhone unless you plan on jailbreaking it to add more features
I mean, lets face it... Why would you pay 300 dollars for an iPod that has internet, but nothing to use it, and mac osx, but nothing to install?
Once you have jailbroken your iPod/iphone you can add extra apps like games, emulators, custom themes, and more. Also doing this allows you to put iPhone apps on the iPod.
Over all its very cool, but what I think is cooler is how I typed all this... On my iPod.

Ok, if there is one person I cant possibly understand it would be president Ahmadinejad of Iran. I mean, he's so stupid, that I wont even add his name to my recognized words list on MS Word. I mean seriously, he must have an IQ of maybe 20 or 30, to actually say and believe that the holocaust didn't happen, and now he says the September 11th attacks didn't happen either. I just heard an interview with him on 60 minutes, and he wouldn't even directly answer any of the interviewers questions. The reporter kept having to say "Can I take that as a no sir?"
